TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE! AVOID EXPOSURE OF (PREGNANT) WOMEN! AVOID EXPOSURE OF ADOLESCENTS AND CHILDREN!

  • INHALATION
  • Laboured breathing. (see Ingestion).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • Pain. Redness.
    Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES

  • Safety goggles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Nausea. Vomiting.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place (extra personal protection: A/P2 filter respirator for organic vapour and harmful dust).
Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from food and feedstuffs. See Chemical Dangers. Cool. Well closed.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
    DARK BROWN LIQUID

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides. The substance is a weak acid. Reacts with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard. May decompose when heated above 32░C.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV not established.

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
No indication can be given about the rate in which a harmful concentration in the air is reached on evaporation of this substance at 20░C.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
    The substance irritates the skin.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes malformations in human babies.
    PHYSICAL
    PROPERTIES
    Boiling point at 0.007kPa: 138-140░C
    Relative density (water = 1): 1.10
    Solubility in water: none
Vapour pressure, Pa at 20░C: negligible
    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. Avoid release to the environment in circumstances different to normal use.
    N O T E S
Incompatible with oil, oil based sprays and lime sulfur mixture. Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties. Caprane, Crotothane and Karathane are trade names.
